Pair of Early Buffet Clarinets
An excellent condition pair of early Buffet clarinets, which are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, having been part of a large collection formerly owned by a leading UK professional. It is likely from the way the barrels are labelled that this set was prepared for sale by the late Professor John Playfair. The Bb has serial numbers 209I1, which dates to 1914. The wood is in excellent condition, as is the German Silver keywork. The pads are used tan leather all are sealing well. The A has S/N 1N779, which dates to 1921, though it could be 1I779 dating to 1913. Either way the pair are well matched in design and keywork. Like the Bb the A is in excellent condition for a clarinet which is over 100 years old. The wood is very good, with no cracks or repairs, as is the keywork. Like the Bb the pads are used tan leather. Both instruments have modern Buffet barrels which have been adapted to suit the earlier larger bores of Buffets of this period. This pair would suit a period instrument player, or are perfectly usable at A=440 Hz with all modern French bore m'pieces. The case is a Buffet Prestige example from the 1980s with a dust cover in fine condition.
