Selmer, Paris, Pair of Clarinets
A pair of early Selmer clarinets. These instruments are original logo Selmers and the serial numbers suggest the mid 1920s as the date of manufacture. The pair are a commission sale for Clarinets Direct, having formerly been owned by a professional player, a long time member of English National Ballet.
The Bb has matching serial numbers throughout 4801. The instrument is in fair condition, with no cracks or damage. The German Silver keywork shows much "Verdigris", and the pads are all heavily used. The pair would benefit from a full and complete overhaul, including key work polishing, but we are simply too busy in our workshop, so the pair are sold on ,"as is", at a bargain price. The Bb features an enhanced Boehm mechanism with 7 rings instead of 6.
The A, S/N 6257, is in a similar condition to teh Bb. The barrel is not original it is a modern Selmer A barrel from a 10S, which actually tunes the early Selmer very well, the bore is roughly comparable. . Both instruments play with a sweet even tone, at A=440 Hz with modern m'pieces, a modern Selmer HS* is supplied. They play perfectly well at the moment. It is easy to see, after playing them, why Selmer became the dominant manufacturer of clarinets worldwide in the 1920s and 1930s. The case is used but fully functional.
