Noblet, Paris, Alto Clarinet
An ultra rare [and possibly unique] Noblet, Paris, Alto Clarinet, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. This example features the early Noblet logo, and also a double overblowing mechanism for the second register: In other words there are 2 overblowing vents, and just like a Selmer Paris Bass clarinet, the lower is actuated up until D in the second register, with the upper vent used for E and above. Selmer Paris made a double overblowing vent Alto, with open holes in the 1950s. it is possible that this design by Noblet dates from a similar era. The advantages are a much better response and intonation in the clarion register. Noblet started manufacturing clarinets in 1750, so they actually have the longest pedigree of any French manufacturer.
This instrument has had only one professional owner, a jazz musician. We have just completely overhauled in tan leather pads, and the clarinet is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The matching serial numbers are 1311, but with Leblanc serial number lists being very unreliable online, it is hard to date this clarinet with any certainty. Note also the lack of a small register key "bleed hole" in the LH index, it could be that the manufacture date for this clarinet is immediately post WW2. The key work is German Silver in good condition. There was obviously a crack to the upper joint at some point in the past, hence the 3 banded crack repair. However this has completely closed up, and it does not go through to the bore. We could not photograph the crack. The wood shows surface marks and scuffs, there are some minor dents to the bell, and "brassing" to the crook, but this Alto responds, and plays superbly. It was obviously used heavily by the former owner, but for an instrument over 70 years old the condition is good. The original case is still functional, but much worn. The supplied m'piece is a Vandoren 5RV in good condition, a sling is provided. With contemporary quality French manufactured Alto Clarinets costing in excess of £8000, and offering an inferior acoustical design, this Alto is superb value for money.
