Buffet, S1, B Flat Clarinet
A fine condition UK stamp Buffet S1 clarinet in Silver plate, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought Buffet Crampon in the mid 1970's he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20, which became the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets. In the case of the S1 this is partly achieved by much less undercutting.
This Bb has serial no. 175659, which dates to 1977, an exceptionally fine period of manufacture at Buffet Crampon. It was sold by Buffet Crampon UK, which at that time had premises in Pages Walk, Lambeth, London. UK stamp instruments were meant to play firmly down to A=440 Hz. There is very little wear to the plating, only slight wear to the RH rings, and the key regulation is tight, there is no joint wobble. There is no damage to the wood, which is in fine order throughout. This clarinet has had only one professional owner, and it has been very well cared for. The instrument has just been completely overhauled by Clarinets Direct and is sold with our full 1 year warranty. The S1 clarinet plays with a robust, focused sound and excellent evenness and intonation. In the past players such as John McCaw and Mitchell Lurie played S1's. The m'piece is a used Vandoren B45 Lyre, in good condition. The Buffet case shows some scuffs to the exterior and interior stains but latches well.
