MATCHED PAIR OF HERBERT WURLITZER SCHMIDT REFORM BOEHM CLARINETS
A very good condition matched pair of Herbert Wurlitzer Schmidt Reform Boehm clarinets. Clarinets Direct is Europe's leading specialist clarinet dealer. We are fortunate indeed to be able to offer these rare and fine Schmidt Reform Boehm system clarinets. These clarinets were bought new by Julia Rayson and used by her in the later part of her career, as Principal Clarinet in a German Orchestra.
For many players these clarinets are the ultimate Boehm system: In tune, made with consummate craftsmanship and offering a uniquely characterful tone, which contrasts sharply with some modern mass produced instruments. This pair were one of the last made by Herbert Wurlitzer who has a reputation second to none, he succeeded his father, Fritz, who was the foremost German manufacturer of SRB clarinets. Fritz had gradually reduced the interior bore of his designs, and Herbert continued the manufacture of this type of bore. These days the firm of Schwenk and Seggelke are generally accepted as the most highly regarded clarinet makers in the World. Unlike many modern manufacturers who claim to make a Schmidt Reform Boehm, these clarinets are the genuine and superb article.
These H Wurlitzer Schmidt Reform Boehm clarinets feature: A booster mechanism for throat Bb. An additional vent for the D/A twelfth, working off the LH 3rd ring. A compensating low G/D pad. And a vent for the B/F# twelfth. Also a tuning hole in the bell for the bottom notes. All of this results in a clarinet of superb evenness and unmatched security of intonation. Indeed the problem confronting the player used to the inherent shortcomings of the standard Boehm, is learning not to adjust embouchure pressure to correct the non existent faults on this instrument!
The Bb has serial no. 84067, which dates to 1984, and has Silver plate in excellent condition throughout, with no discernible wear. The wood is excellent condition, without cracks or repairs, but due to a problem with her right hand, Julia had to play the clarinet with a floor peg attachment, which was fitted to the Bb bell. The mounting for the floor peg is photographed in photo 2. This we have removed and the 6 screw holes for this in the bell we have filled and sealed. Both clarinets have had a full overhaul in our workshop, in fish skin pads, and are sold with our 1 year warranty. Both instruments are stamped " Herbert Wurlitzer, Nuestadt/A, Made in Germany". All pieces are matching and original, and the 2 supplied Bb barrels measure 57.0mm & 60.0mm.
The A has serial no. 84066 and is identical condition to the Bb. A single screw hole was drilled in the lower joint, again to fit a floor support, but Julia found that she preferred to play the Bb bell on the A using the already mounted attachment, so no support was fitted to the A clarinet. There are 2 original barrels of 58.0mm and 60.0mm. The 2 m'pieces are well used No. 2 Herbert Wurlitzers, we do have a large selection of Julia's Reform Boehm Wurlitzer [and other makers m'pieces] in "as new" condition. If wished replacement m'pieces can be supplied. There are in addition 4 further barrels and another Bb bell also available. The supplied original case is well used, but fully functional.
