Buffet, BC20, B Flat Clarinet
When the American investor Martin Tolchin bought the Buffet Crampon company he felt that though the R13 sold well in the USA, different models would be more successful in Europe. The S1, Continentale and BC20, which evolved into the RC, were all attempts to make darker, more focused sounding clarinets. The great French player, Jacques Lancelot was particularly associated with the development of the BC20 model, which was launched in the 1960's.
This is a BC 20 Bb clarinet with matching serial nos. F202079 dating to 1980, at this period Buffet Crampon had not yet been taken over by Boosey & Hawkes, and their quality control and manufacturing standards were exemplary. In addition there is a further serial number on the lower joint, 34537, which may have been added later by an owner as a security precaution. The key work is in Silver plate, which is in very good condition, indeed the quality of this plating puts contemporary Buffet standards to shame. The wood is excellent throughout with no cracks, damage or repairs. The key regulation is tight and there is no joint wobble. The instrument was originally supplied with a LH Ab/Eb lever, but it has been removed. The clarinet has mainly white leather pads, with some in cork, all pads are in very good condition, and will be good for some time to come. The m'piece is an up-grade to a good condition used Vandoren 5RV lyre. The case is the original, with some interior stains, but is again in good condition.
