Malerne, Paris, Alto Clarinet
This is a Malerne, Paris, Professional Alto Clarinet in fair condition, which is a commission sale for Clarinets Direct. Malerne were a second rank French manufacturer active from 1932 to about 1950. It is likely from the lack of a 3rd register overblowing vent that this clarinet dates from the 1930s, however this aside, the key work design is relatively modern. There are crack repairs to the Grenadilla wood to both of the main joints, with 3 carbon fibre rings to the top of the upper joint, and 1 to the upper part of the lower joint [ see photos 6 & 7]. In addition, where the original thumb rest/sling hook has been removed and replaced, there is an unfilled screw hole, and either some old metal screws have been left in situ, or further pinning has been done in the past. The current owner believes that Howarth did the carbon fibre ring repairs. The instrument has predominantly used fish skin pads, though the bell has a white leather pad, all are in good used condition. The German Silver key work shows some tarnish and wear, please select photos and hover over them with your mouse to view in close up. The instrument comes with a good condition Vandoren 5RV Alto m'piece and Reed & Squeak soft case.
